Perplexity Hybrid Compute: the 24GB way to run Perplexity Computer on your Mac

The 36GB requirement is only for the fully local mode. Since September 2026, Perplexity Computer has offered a second way to run: Hybrid Compute, which pairs cloud models with a local model on your Mac behind an on-device privacy gate - starting at 24GB of unified memory.

What Hybrid Compute actually is

Each Perplexity Computer task is split in two. The cloud half uses frontier models for reasoning, web search and planning. The local half runs a compact model on your Mac for the parts that touch your data: private files, sensitive information and on-device actions. Computer starts each task in the cloud and hands the sensitive steps to the local model; the two halves stay in one continuous task, so you never copy files between tools or restart the job.

The split works from anywhere: you can trigger a task from your iPhone, and the Mac - as long as it is on and running the Perplexity app - accesses your files and runs the sensitive steps locally.

The privacy gate: what decides what leaves your Mac

Between the two halves sits what Perplexity calls the privacy gate: an on-device PII classifier that reads each task on the Mac before anything is sent to the cloud. Names, addresses and account numbers are swapped for stand-ins, then restored when the answer returns. Depending on what it finds, the gate can mask the sensitive parts, keep the whole step local, refuse the request outright, or ask for your consent first.

Perplexity open-sourced the classifier - trained in collaboration with its Secure Intelligence Institute - so outside researchers can inspect how the gate makes that call instead of asking users to take it on trust.

What your Mac needs

The bar is lower than fully local mode, but it has two parts people miss:

Hardware: an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) running macOS 15 or newer, with at least 24GB of unified memory. Perplexity recommends 32GB for the best results. Machines with 8GB or 16GB cannot run Hybrid Compute.

Subscription: Hybrid Compute is available to Perplexity Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers - it is not in the free tier. The three local models available at launch are Gemma 4 E4B, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B, and a Perplexity post-trained model.

The key honesty point: Hybrid is not fully local, and we do not describe it as such. The cloud still does the heavy reasoning. But for a 24-32GB Mac - machines this site's checker correctly rejects for fully local mode - Hybrid is the realistic way to run Perplexity Computer workflows on the Mac you already own, with private files handled by the local model behind the privacy gate.

How to set it up

Perplexity's own three steps, no manual runtime setup (no Ollama, no API key):

1. Download and open the latest Perplexity Mac app. 2. Download a local model in one click. 3. Open the model selector, select Hybrid, then choose the local and cloud models for the task. Work handled by the local model uses no cloud credits.

On a 24-32GB Mac and want the middle path? The free checker will tell you fully local mode is a no - that verdict has not changed. Hybrid is the second option on the same machine. If you are buying new and want the fully local experience, the Best Macs guide explains how to clear the 36GB line.

Frequently asked questions

What is Perplexity Computer Hybrid Compute?

A mode that splits each task between frontier models in the cloud and a local model on your Mac. The cloud handles reasoning, web search and planning; the local model handles private files, sensitive information and on-device actions, with an on-device privacy gate deciding what leaves your Mac.

How much memory does Hybrid Compute need?

An Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 15 or later and at least 24GB of unified memory; 32GB is recommended for the best results. You also need a Perplexity Pro, Max or Enterprise subscription.

Is Hybrid Compute the same as fully local mode?

No. Fully local mode runs everything on the Mac and needs 36GB. Hybrid still uses the cloud for reasoning, so it is not offline-capable - but it works on 24GB machines.

What is the privacy gate?

An on-device PII classifier that reads each task before anything is sent to the cloud. It swaps sensitive details for stand-ins and restores them on return, or keeps the step local, refuses it, or asks for consent. Perplexity open-sourced the classifier.
